Game Dev Tycoon Review

Over the years, many of us have played simulation games in some form, either as a life simulation like The Sims Series, all the way to what many recognise as simulation games like Train, Plane, Farm Simulators. But one kind of simulation game has always taken my interest in particular, this is the business Simulation games, highly popular on smart phone and Tablet devices, thanks to Kairosoft. One in particular title in Kairosoft’s simulation Series that got many of us hooked was Game Dev Story, what seems to be the first game that had us take the role as a game Developer.

So it wasn’t long till we heard of a Game Dev Simulation to be coming to the PC, in the form of Game Dev Tycoon from Greenheart Games; a new independent studio, who recently had their game come to Steam through the Greenlight program. Now you may have heard of this game before for its unique way of dealing with pirated versions of their game. The game’s developers implemented a unique anti-piracy measure for Game Dev Tycoon. Patrick Klug, founder of Greenheart Games, knowing that the game was likely to be extensively, purposely released a cracked version of the game and uploaded it himself to torrent sites. Gameplay in this version is identical except for one variation, as players progress through the game they receive the following message:

Boss, it seems that while many players play our new game, they steal it by downloading a cracked version rather than buying it legally. If players don’t buy the games they like, we will sooner or later go bankrupt.
—Greenheart Games, Game Dev Tycoon

Eventually players of the cracked version will gradually lose money until they do go bankrupt, as a result of pirates (not the plundering, sailing the high seas kind).

So what is there to expect with Game Dev Tycoon, well if you have played Game Dev Story, not much difference in gameplay. It is easy to see that Greenheart Games did get a lot of inspiration from the Kairosoft title, but then again what can you really do to change a simulation game, but either add new equipment or upgrade the graphics. They do try to change things a little with the added extras of contract game development, an R&D department and the ability to create your own console. Also another feature that will be unlocked further into the game is MMO games. In other words, Game Dev Tycoon seems to have a base gameplay of Game Dev Story, then seem to of improved on it in a good way with certain elements in the games industry today that were not noticeable when Kairosoft’s title was released.

Also the graphics are simple, with what you would expect from an independent game. Still it is great to watch, especially when most of the time you are sat watching your team just working away either on a new game engine or gaming project.

So this is a good game even though from just looking at it from a far, you would think it is just Game Dev Story on Steam. But once you get into the game it is a lot more detailed, with extra options on top. But then just like Kairosoft’s title, the game can be quite limited and after so long it can get a little boring. But this game is meant to be played as a casual game it seems, so it is perfect for people who just want something to play during their lunch break at their computer or if you have a limited amount of time. So if you like Simulation games or a fan of Game Dev Story and want to play something like that on the PC, then this game is worth buying.
