The Update for week ending 17 May 2015

Hello Fellow Cravers. GD is here to bring you this weeks top 3 gaming news stories, the top 5 games, new releases and a recap of YouTube of the week with the Update!

3) Still not sure about Splatoôn? Nintendo gives another chance to play for free

Wii U owners will get another chance to check out Splatoon for free in another Global Testfire, Nintendo announced this week.

To go hands-on, online with the upcoming paint shooter, players just need to download the Splatoon Global Testfire software from the Wii U’s eShop. The game’s 4-v-4 multiplayer turf war mode will be live on May 23 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. PT. ( 11pm to 12am UK time)

The game hits stores, and the eShop, on May 29.

2) No Walking Dead season 3 in 2015, but expect something this year

Fans of Telltale’s The Walking Dead episodic series shouldn’t expect Season 3 this year, director of PR Job Stauffer said on Twitter. However, the studio still has something in store for the series in 2015.

Stauffer has tweeted several times about an upcoming announcement, hinting that news could arrive as soon as E3.

“To re-clarify, no, TWD S3 is *not* starting in 2015,” he tweeted. “But what I am seeing this week will be, and it is insanely cool. Stay close, news soon!”

In a follow-up tweet, he added “something BIG for WD fans…”

The Walking Dead Season 2 concluded last summer. It’s still unclear what the announcement could be. Notably, Telltale previously released DLC for the game called 400 Days that followed five different protagonists in several short stories.

Telltale is currently working on a plethora of other episodic projects, including games based on Minecraft and Game of Thrones.

1) Is Konami out of the AAA games industry?

Konami’s big focus moving forward will be mobile, not AAA games, according to a translated interview with the company’s new CEO Hideki Hayakawa.

According to the article, the company plans to pursue mobile games aggressively and make its main platform mobile.

“Following the pay-as-you-play model of games like Power Pro and Winning Eleven with additional content, our games must move from selling things like ‘items’ to selling things like ‘features,'” according to the translation. “We saw with these games that even people who buy physical games are motivated to buy extra content. The success of Power Proespecially has motivated us to actively push more of our popular series onto mobile than ever before.

“Gaming has spread to a number of platforms, but at the end of the day, the platform that is always closest to us, is mobile. Mobile is where the future of gaming lies.”

Hayakawa added that while they hope that Metal Gear Solid 5 and Winning Eleven continue to do well, “we are always thinking about how to push our franchises onto mobile there too.

“With multiplatform games, there’s really no point in dividing the market into categories anymore. Mobiles will take on the new role of linking the general public to the gaming world.”

Project Cars holds on to No1 for a second week to become the first Bandai Namco title to do so since Ridge Racer Type 4 over 16 years ago.  Stand-alone expansion Wolfenstein: The Old Blood from Bethesda debuts at No2 on PS4, Xbox One and PC.  Despite having been launched digitally on May 5th, the boxed versions debut strongly in the chart, especially the PS4 version.  Grand Theft Auto V makes way, dropping one place to No3, however this is not going to trouble Take 2/Rockstar’s record breaker as it has now passed 5 million sales in the UK alone.  Mortal Kombat X also slips one place, down to No4, ahead of a re-entry for Square-Enix’s Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster which rebounds back into the chart at No5 thanks to the launch of a PS4 version.  Big hitters FIFA 15 and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare both look comfortable in the Top 10 at No’s 6 and 7 respectively.  More previous No1s occupy the final 3 Top 10 places with Dying Light down 3 places to No8, Destiny up one place to No9 and Battlefield Hardline down 3 places to No10.  Bandai Namco could well be celebrating three 3 weeks at No1 next week as Project Cars goes up against another of their own titles, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

New at No.5:          FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD REMASTER

Down 1 to No.4:     MORTAL KOMBAT X
