Hello Fellow Cravers. I am GD and I am here with this weeks top 3 gaming news stories outside of E3, the top 5 games, new releases and a recap of YouTube of the week with the Update!
3) Destiny Players pay respect to Guardian who passed away
Destiny’s community came together this week in tribute to a well liked and highly accomplished player, and to give condolences to his clan after he passed away last week.
There were numerous salutes by Destiny players, many of whom didn’t know Joshua R. Stokell, who died June 8 after a lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis. His clan, the Dads of Destiny, put out a call over Destiny’s subreddit for video clips of salutes and other tributes, editing them together in the memorial you can see below.
Stokell, 36, of Charlotte, N.C., was known as TheSquashPhD (his player screen opens the memorial.) The PhD in his handle came from his real life degree in biology, which he earned in 2013. He had studied cystic fibrosis at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and his work had been published in the Journal of Cystic Fibrosis. Stokell had continued post-doctoral research on cystic fibrosis, particularly the treatment of lung infections, through a fellowship with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Many of the clips in the memorial feature players bowing and saluting, with others forming a rifle party for a three-volley salute. The thread the Dads started for Stokell drew more than 250 responses. “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!” they wrote. “We are proud to honor our friend.”
2) E3 tops 50,000 attendances for first time since 2006
E3 2015 is over so you know what that means. That means it’s time to announce E3 2016. It’ll be June 14 to June 16 of that year, with the usual press conferences two days preceding it.
The Entertainment Software Association, which organizes E3, announced the dates in a statement touting this year’s expo as a record-breaker in social media. Twitch, the official live-streaming partner for E3, reported that peak viewership for the show’s news conferences hit more than 500,000 concurrent viewers.
This year E3 allowed fans in for the first time in its 20 year history. About 4,000 to 5,000 attendees not affiliated with the industry or media covering it were invited to the show by various exhibitors.
As such, this year’s attendance at E3 50,000 for the first time since 2006, when a format change bottomed out attendance to 10,000 in 2007 and even lower for 2008.
This year some 274 exhibitors bought space at E3 — up from 187 last year. That figure was helped by the presence of exhibitors showing mobile and virtual reality games and devices.
1) Batman Arkham Knight brings a 3.5GB day-one patch for PS4
If you’re looking forward to cozying up to Batman: Arkham Knight first thing on its launch day, June 23, you may want to build in some time for a big 3.5 GB download of its day-one patch if you have a PlayStation 4.
Reddit’s PS4 group grabbed a screenshot showing the beefy size of the file — for PlayStation 4. Patch notes say it adds the “Rival Points” feature, plus the original Batman skin, support for future DLC, and the ever-present Improved Performance and Stability Fixes.
No word if the Xbox One or PC versions will face the same size download, but day one patches are with us for good, particularly for big releases, like it or not.
The game isn’t out until Tuesday, but reviews began publishing yesterday. Polygon handed Batman: Arkham Knight a perfect 10, saying developer Rocksteady’s comprehensive approach to what should be the Arkham series’ swan song is “the best game of this console generation.”
UK GAME CHARTS
The huge success of the Jurassic World film at the box office seems to have rubbed off on Warner’s Lego title as Lego Jurassic World eats up The Elder Scrolls Online, jumping one place to No1. It is the first Lego No1 since The Lego Movie Videogame in early 2014. It also becomes the 7th Traveller’s Tales Lego title to reach No1 since Lego Star Wars kicked it all off in March 2005. The Xbox 360 version consolidates its position as the lead format for Lego Jurassic World with sales up 26%. Sales of The Elder Scrolls Online drop by 71% in its second week as it falls down to No2. The Witcher III: Wild Hunt holds on to No3 ahead of Grand Theft Auto V and FIFA 15 who both climb one place to No’s 4 and 5 respectively. Payday 2: Crimewave Edition falls from No4 to No6 with sales only down by 24%. Two very different shooters; Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Splatoon are both non-movers at No7 and No8, while a third shooter, Destiny sneaks back into the Top 10, up 2 places to No9. Minecraft: Xbox Edition rounds off the Top 10, also up 2 places, to No10. No other new releases make the Top 20 this week, although another new Warner No1 beckons with big hitter Batman: Arkham Knight due for release on Tuesday.
Up 1 to No.5: FIFA 15
Up 1 to No.4: GRAND THEFT AUTO V
Still at No.3: THE WITCHER III: WILD HUNT
Down 1 to No.2: THE ELDER SCROLLS ONLINE
