NEWS

3) Phoenix Wright Anime coming next year

Capcom’s Ace Attorney series is getting its own anime, the developer announced at Tokyo Game Show.

The news came from a presentation about the next game in the franchise, Ace Attorney 6. Details were light, but Capcom did confirm an airdate of April 2016.

The anime will feature Phoenix Wright, Maya Fey and Miles Edgeworth, among other notable, as of yet unannounced characters from the games.

Capcom announced the new Ace Attorney 6 earlier this month. Phoenix Wright’s latest is playable at the Tokyo event and will launch on the Nintendo 3DS in both Japan and the West in 2016.

The most recent release in the franchise is a spinoff set in Japan’s Meiji period and came out this summer. Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodo Ryunosuke no Boken (or The Great Ace Attorney for short) has not been confirmed to make it to the West.

Phoenix Wright was last seen stateside in the 3DS title Dual Destinies, which we enjoyed when it hit the Nintendo eShop in 2013.

2)Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 to have PlayStation VR support

Team Ninja’s third entry in its vacation and volleyball-themed spin-off of the Dead or Alive fighting game franchise will be released in Japan next spring, the developer announced at Tokyo Game Show today. The PlayStation 4 version of the game, known as Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 Fortune, will support Sony’s virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR.

The developer also announced the cast of Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 — which is also coming to PlayStation Vita under the name Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 Venus. The roster features Marie Rose, Honoka, Kasumi, Ayane, Kokoro, Nyotengu, Hitomi, Momiji and Helena. That group of fighters turned frolickers was determined by a fan vote, with ‘s Marie Rose leading the poll by a wide margin.

It’s not clear yet just how Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 Fortune will support PlayStation VR, which is the final name of Sony’s head-mounted display previously known as Project Morpheus.

Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 is being developed exclusively for Japan and the rest of Asia, according to Team Ninja lead Yosuke Hayashi. The game was announced for PS4 and Vita last month.

1) Konami is winding down it’s AAA game productions

Konami is winding down development on all AAA game production, with the exception of the Pro Evolution Soccer series, according to French site Gameblog.

The publication claims that all console projects have been either stopped or canceled. The news comes from the same site in the wake of rumors of Fox Engine technology director Julien Merceron departing the company; Eurogamer has apparently independently verified both reports.

Konami has been a company of massive change as of late, beginning with rumors of Hideo Kojima’s departure, its cancelation of Silent Hills and the removal of its playable teaser, P.T., from the PlayStation Store, and a major internal restructuring. In May, new CEO Hideki Hayakawa told Nikkei Trendy Net that mobile is the platform that is “always closest to us … mobile is where the future of gaming lies.” In a followup from Konami, however, the company said it would continue to pursue console and PC games.

“Konami will continue to embrace the challenge of creating entertainment content via different platforms; across not only mobile platforms, but for home consoles, arcade units, and cards, to meet the changing needs of the times,” Konami said in a letter provided to Polygon.

Gameblog’s report suggests that Merceron leaving is related to Konami’s focus on mobile.

In March, hiring listings for a new stealth-focused project were posted on Konami’s site. A separate page added that the company “has resolved to embark on production of a new ‘Metal Gear’ series.”

Konami released Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain on Sept. 1. According to a Nikkei profile released in August, which described Konami as an abhorrent workplace, The Phantom Pain was the final project before the company would shift to mobile games. The game’s online component, Metal Gear Online, launches in October for consoles and next year on PC.

The most recent title in the PES series, Pro Evolution Soccer 2016, launched Sept. 15 in North America. The company recently announced that it will release a new title in the Pawapuro series next spring for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. A mobile Pawapuro is present at TGS, along with Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain and PES 2016.
