The Update for week ending 14th December 2015

Hello Fellow Cravers. I am GD and I am here with this weeks top 3 gaming news stories, Top 5, new releases and a recap of YouTube of the week with the Update!

3)Ark coming to Xbox One this week

Smash PC hit Ark: Survival Evolved is making the leap to consoles on Dec. 16 when it launches on Xbox One’s Game Preview platform. The unfinished game will sell for $34.99.

Similar to Steam’s Early Access, Game Preview is a self-publishing platform that allows creators the opportunity to sell games still in development. Currently there are only three other titles in the program, including Layers of Fear, and The Long Dark. Frontier Developments’ spacefaring simulation was part of the program, but has since graduated into the full release category.

A press release issued by developer Studio Wildcard puts the total sales of Ark on PC at 2.5 million, while SteamSpy puts the number closer to 2.1 million. Regardless of numbers sold, the title has remained in the list of the top 10 most played games on SteamCharts since its release in June of this year. It is also compatible with the Oculus Rift.

The press release goes on to say that the game will launch with “all game content currently in the PC build — nearly three times the amount of gameplay available at its original launch on Steam. … A steady delivery of exclusive Xbox One content prior to full game launch expected in June 2016.”

Formed just last year, the small team of developers behind it has set a blistering pace and has plans to launch the game on PlayStation 4 in 2016.

2)Gearbox Opens Quebec Studio

Gearbox Software, the Dallas-area developer behind the Borderlands franchise, has founded a satellite studio in Quebec City, Canada, the company announced this week.

Gearbox has partnered with numerous developers and publishers before, but Gearbox Studio Quebec represents the first time in the company’s 16-year history that it has established a separate office. Gearbox Studio Quebec is now hiring, with the intent of “growing to full AAA production capability through 2016,” according to a press release from Gearbox. The Canadian studio’s website currently lists 16 open positions.

As for what Gearbox Studio Quebec will be working on once it staffs up, Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford said the satellite office will “help us build fun and exciting video games within our tent-pole brands.” Those brands include the long-running Borderlands and Brothers in Arms series, and Gearbox is working on Battleborn that is scheduled to launch in May 2016.

Gearbox Studio Quebec will be run by Sebastien Caisse, PhD, as co-studio head and director of operations, and Pierre-Andre Dery as co-studio head and studio creative director. Caisse has a long history in business development for companies such as Squeeze Animation and Quebecor Media; Dery previously worked as chief operating officer at Volta and art director at Activision.

“To be able work for such a storied independent game studio as Gearbox is a great honor,” said Caisse.

Quebec City, the capital of Quebec, is the home of developers such as Ubisoft Quebec (Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate), Beenox (Skylanders SuperChargers) and Frima Studio (Chariot), all of which are at least a decade old. The province of Quebec, which also includes Montreal, is a very desirable location for game makers to set up shop because of the government’s generous tax credits for game development, which can go as high as 37.5 percent.

1) GTA Online Update coming this Tuesday

An update coming Tuesday to Grand Theft Auto Online, called Executives and Other Criminals, will bring new modes of play and a slew of vehicles and lifestyle items.

The new cooperative gameplay mode will let players establish their own criminal enterprise and hire on other human players to serve as paid muscle. They’ll receive a regular paycheck of in-game currency and their own special benefits as well. Those in charge of the operation will find new co-op jobs and challenges in Grand Theft Auto Online, and new special abilities for use in Freemode.

Executives and Other Criminals also brings along a heavy dose of the bling for which Grand Theft Auto Online has become well known. In addition to armed and armored cars, the new Super Yacht also is available, with a fleet of companion vehicles including a helicopter. Luxury apartments up in the Vinewood Hills help complete the bigshot persona.

More details are available through Rockstar Newswire. The update is free and arrives Dec. 15 for the PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One versions of Grand Theft Auto 5.

This is the week 50 chart, but thanks to the Gregorian calendar this year is also a 53 week year (last occurred in 2009). Consequently, the last published chart before Christmas will be next week and that is the definition for the Christmas Chart (week 51, ending Saturday 19th December). Jockeying for position and next week’s Christmas No1 is looking like a 3 horse race. Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops III climbs one place to No1 – last year Activision held off EA’s FIFA 15 as Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was the 2014 Xmas No1. At No2 this week is EA’s Star Wars Battlefront, up from No3 – this title could benefit from Star Wars 7 movie mania, released in just a few days. EA also have FIFA 16 which drops 2 places to No3 this week but FIFA games currently hold the record in terms of Xmas No1’s with 8 so far. Records for traditional entertainment software Xmas No1’s actually date back 32 years to 1984 and although the charts back then were very different it was in fact Activision’s Ghostbusters on Spectrum and Commodore machines that claimed the first ever Xmas No1 (week 51, 1984). Bethesda moves up one place to No4 with Fallout 4 and Telltale Games’ Minecraft: Story Mode climbs 2 places to No5. Last week’s 2 big new releases drop places, with Square Enix’s Just Cause 3 down 2 to No6 and Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy Rainbow 6: Siege down 3 places to No 9.

Up 2 to No.5:            MINECRAFT STORY MODE

Up 1 to No.4:            FALLOUT 4

Down 2 to  No.3:     FIFA 16

Up 1 to No.2:            STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT
